There are so many variables to consider and the whole process can be off-putting.

With each of these exercises, choose a weight that allows you to perform 8-10 repetitions and on that 9th or 10th you should be STRUGGLING to get it. This is how you build muscle, you push through those last, difficult reps. Perform 3-4 sets of the exercises you choose (like the ones below).
